Making an impact in our community: CSR at Notch

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business model that reflects the idea that companies should create a positive impact on people, the planet, and wider society. As a self-regulating model, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to CSR. As such, the initiatives and strategies employed by each organisation vary based on their definition of “social responsibility” and how this intersects with their values and day-to-day operations.

In this blog, we want to share what CSR means to us here at Notch by outlining how we plan and implement CSR initiatives, as well as highlighting some of our previous activities. We also want to provide an insight into how we plan to continue evolving our approach to ensure it remains aligned with our values and continues supporting both our local and global community.

At Notch, we are committed to ensuring that we are a socially responsible organisation. As part of this, we are focused on identifying opportunities for us to play an active role in tackling social issues. Whether this is reducing the environmental impacts of our working practices or supporting local charitable organisations through fundraising and outreach, we are continually evaluating how we can create a positive social impact.

To guide the planning and delivery of CSR initiatives, we have established the Notch CSR steering committee. This group comprises volunteers from across the company to ensure a wide range of viewpoints and life experiences are represented. We also regularly canvass the wider Notch team to provide opportunities for them to offer feedback on our previous activities and make suggestions for future initiatives. Through this, we ensure that our CSR approach remains aligned with the values of the whole Notch team.

As a part of our core CSR strategy, we have identified three key focus areas with specific aims, which have been selected by combining our social values and organisational capabilities. To ensure we achieve our objective of creating an impact, we validate that all initiatives are aligned with one — if not more — of the aims set out in these focus areas.

Central to our CSR strategy is ensuring that Notch is an environmentally-conscious and responsible organisation. This means evaluating how we work and identifying opportunities to implement and certify our commitment to sustainability. We also help encourage the Notch team to engage in environmental stewardship, through initiatives like #MeatFreeMondays recipe sharing and sustainability-related challenges.

As a company founded in Manchester, we are passionate about giving back to our community by supporting local charity initiatives. Over the last few years, we have fundraised for a diverse range of organisations including Real Change MCR, The Christie Charity, and The Proud Trust, with activities including bake sales, half marathons, and more. We have also held office collection drives, including food donations for Manchester Central Foodbank and sanitary products for Every Month.

With our focus on the science and technology markets, we recognise the life-changing impact of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Motivated by this, we strive to grow scientific understanding across our team. We are also looking for opportunities to engage in community outreach to share our expertise and help educate the next generation of scientists.

From fundraising challenges to community volunteering, we already have a packed calendar of exciting initiatives planned throughout 2025. To stay informed with our latest updates, make sure to follow Notch Science Marketing on LinkedIn.

Additionally, if you are involved with any Manchester-based organisations, especially those involved in STEM education, we would love to discuss how we could work with you. Please get in touch by emailing hello@notchcommunications.co.uk.
